Il 9 novembre 2011 è stata depositata presso la Regione Emilia-Romagna - Servizio di Valutazione impatto e Promozione sostenibilità ambientale la documentazione relativa alla richiesta di costruzione di un impianto industriale di produzione di energia elettrica sul Passo di Santa Donna, a soli 2, 5 Km dal territorio della Riserva Naturale dei Ghirardi.

Le pale in progetto incombono sul paesaggio della Riserva

L'impianto, costituito da tre generatori eolici alti 150 metri, si va a collocare in una area naturalisticamente importantissima, dove nidificano biancone, astore e falco pecchiaiolo, danneggiando irreparabilmente il paesaggio fin'ora intatto di questa porzione di Appennino, dalla lunga e celebrata storia, valico della strada che da Luni conduceva a Veleia in epoca romana, poi luogo di transito dei pellegrini medioevali sulla Via degli Abati, e teatro di scontri sanguinari durante la repressione nazista.

Dire NO all'impianto industriale significa salvaguardare l'unica risorsa rimasta nelle nostre montagne, il PAESAGGIO, fonte di reddito per gli operatori turistici che stanno lavorando con impegno per garantire un futuro alla valle.

Una centrare industriale di generazione elettrica sul crinale significa:

• alterare per sempre lo skyline delle nostre montagne, facendolo apparire minuscolo e insignificante, cancellando la sua appetibilità turistica

• ridurre di conseguenza il valore immobiliare di edifici e terreni di tutta l'area tra Compiano, Borgotaro e Bardi, come verificato in tanti luoghi d'Italia dove l'interesse turistico è stato cancellato dalla costruzione di impianti industriali di elettrogenerazione eolica

• cancellare per sempre un importante luogo della memoria, dando il via alla distruzione dei crinali dopo quella quasi completata del fondovalle Taro.

• allontanare le specie animali di rilevante interesse comunitario che nidificano nell'area, come biancone, astore, falco pecchiaiolo, averla piccola, tottavilla, succiacapre, come verificatosi anche nel vicino impianto del passo della Cappelletta

• uccidere tramite collisione diretta esemplari dei grandi rapaci veleggiatori che frequentano l'area per nidificare, di quelli che cacciano regolarmente nella zona, come l'aquila reale proveniente da prossime aree di riproduzione, e di quelli che utilizzano il valico durante la migrazione, come il falco di palude nei mesi primaverili, nonchè i pipistrelli in migrazione notturna.

Aquila uccisa dalla collisione con generatore eolico in Norvegia.

SE siete della nostra stessa opinione circa l'opportunità di distruggere il paesaggio e causare la perdita di valori economici e culturali della montagna, vi preghiamo di scrivere una mail in sostegno della nostra protesta, al comune di Borgo Val di Taro.

ci appelliamo a Lei perché prenda in considerazione l'opportunità di NON autorizzare la costruzione dell'impianto eolico sul Passo di Santa Donna.

Distruggere il paesaggio, porre ostacoli allo sviluppo turistico e causare la perdita di importante biodiversità NON è lo sviluppo che vogliamo per Borgotaro e la sua valle.

Early this morning I went with my friend Maurizio to photograph the fallow deer again. We waited for two hours as Jupiter in the sky was fading away, as the first light of the day stroke the trees, just to find that the deer were on the other side of the hill. So, wrapped up in your ghillies like lichen-covered yetis, we crossed the meadows to find a big herd of fallow deer, gathered around four rutting dominant males, two very big bucks, one orange and one light brown, plus another brown orange and a really black one. Sadly, the fights were always hidden from us, just one time we saw two of the males knocking each other. The rutting males were strolling in the open, sometimes chasing away younger males, sometimes following females. Before we left, the bigger male was herding a big group of does, at least twenty, including some calfs and a few young males trying to mate.

Stamattina presto sono andato con il mio amico Maurizio a fotografare ancora i daini. Abbiamo aspettato per un paio d'ore mentre Giove svaniva alle prime luci dell'alba, solo per scoprire che i daini erano sull'altro versante della collina. Abbiamo attraversato i prati avvolti nei nostri ghillies come yeti incrostati di licheni, in tempo per trovare una grossa mandria di daini, raccolti intorno a 4 maschi dominanti, in bramito, due grandi stangoni, uno arancio e uno marrone chiaro, più altri due, uno arancio scuro e uno totalmente nero. Purtroppo i combattimenti avvenivano dove non potevamo vedere, tranne un momento in cui due si sono affacciati oltre il dosso d'erba che li copriva per la maggior parte del tempo. I maschi in bramito trottavano in mezzo al prato, a volte scacciando i maschi giovani, a volte seguendo le femmine. Prima che ce ne andassimo, il maschio più grande era circondato da almeno una ventina di femmine con qualche cucciolo e pochi maschi giovani che cercavano di accoppiassi in barba al dominante.

It's mating season for the fallow deer; there is a black big buck with large antlers rutting heavily in the early morning at the entrance of the Ghirardi Nature Reserve, surrounded by young males and does. They are not tame and photographing them is not easy. I will try again next week, hoping for better pictures.

È stagione degli amori per i daini. C'è un vecchio maschio dai grandi palchi che bramisce incessantemente di prima mattina all'ingresso della Riserva dei Ghirardi, circondato da giovani maschi e femmine. Non sono confidenti e fotografarli non è facile. Ci proverò ancora la prossima settimana, sperando in foto migliori di queste.

A few days ago held a little meeting of Pentaxian photography (coincidentially in the day of the selling of Pentax to Ricoh) at the Ghirardi Nature Reserve, dedicated to macro shooting. The day was beautifully clouded, to give us a diffused, bright light. Some photogs got up at 5,30 AM, to get dew covered insects.

Qualche giorno fa ho organizzato un piccolo meeting di pentaxiani (per coincidenza assolutamente casuale proprio il giorno della vendita a Ricoh) all'Oasi dei Ghirardi, dedicata alla macro. Il giorno è stato magnificamente coperto da nuvole bainche, che ci hanno dato una luce diffusa e chiara. Alcuni fotografi si sono alzati alle 5.30 nel mattino, per catturare gli insetti coperti di rugiada.

He ran on the grass on the side of the hill, no more than two hundred metres from me, separated by thick bushes in little glen. At first I think of the usual roe deer, but when I frame it with binoculars something is wrong.It's a muscular shape, like a wild boar, but it's not shaggy and black. It is gray, pale and smoky like a puff of mist, out of place in this morning of

dazzling sun and lark songs.

Correva sul prato nel versante di fronte, a non più di duecento m da me, un avvallamento fittamente cespugliato a separarci.

All'inizio penso al solito capriolo, ma quando l'inquadro col binocolo qualcosa non torna. La forma è muscolosa, come un cinghiale, ma non è ispida e nera. È grigia, chiara e fumosa come un refolo di nebbia, fuori luogo in questa mattina abbacinante di sole e canti di allodole.

La bestia si ferma. Annusa.

Ha la forma di un cane, ma è del tutto diverso, solido e massiccio, tutt'uno con la terra.

I went to photograph on the bank of the Taro River, not far from my home, especially to try a ghillie that a friend of mine build for me. The results speak for themselves.

I am back on the blog after a month and a half, having being absent first for too much work, and then for a short period without the camera for replacement (the famous stained sensor of the K-5) . In the meantime, we had two weeks of very very hot days, with temperatures up to 32°c, then last sunday it began to drop a little (but we managed to go to the sea and had a swim and some snorkeling) and then thursday it rained (snowing above 1000m) and a sudden, big drop of temperature.

Luckily, I resumed photography with a trip to the Torrile Reserve, near Parma, in the plain, and had some nice shots.

Di nuovo sul forum dopo un mese e mezzo, assente prima per troppo lavoro, poi per un breve periodo senza macchina, in via di rimpiazzo per il noto problema del sensore macchiato della K-5. Nel frattempo, abbiamo avuto due settimane di caldo estivo, con temperature fino a 32°c, poi domenica scorsa si sono abbassate un poco (ma siamo riusciti ad andare al mare a Levanto e fare il bagno e anche snorkeling), poi giovedì scorso è piovuto (neve sopra i 1000m) e un'imporvvisa discesa della temperatura.

Fortunatamente ho ricominciato a fotografare, con un giro alla Riserva di Torrile, riuscendo a fare qualche bello scatto.

It's been a week and more than cold masses of Siberian air blows over the peninsula, right after we had a mild period of two weeks. Today it was the third fall of snow in six days, and while the last two snow didn't last to the evening, now (7 pm) there are five centimetres. I got a cold, so the only pictures I took were from the window. :-p

Da una settimana e più masse d'aria fredda soffiano sulla penisola dalla Siberia, appena dopo il periodo di mite temperatura durata due settimane. Oggi è stata la terza nevicata in sei giorni, e mentre nelle ultime due la neve non è durata fino alla sera, ora (alle 19) ce ne sono cinque centimetri. Io ho l'influenza e le uniche foto che ho fatto le ho prese dalla finestra. :-p

It's a week very sunny and unusually mild. The snow is slowly melting, but during the cold night it froze. Birds come all the day long to the feeder, and I spent some time last Sunday to photograph them. Soon I will post the pictures, for now just this great tit.

After a few days of clear sky and mild temperatures, that melted the last week snow again, yesterday we had the first serious snowfall of the year, with around 40 cm of snow on ground.

Today temperature risen to 1°c, in the afternoon we had some snow mixed with rain. There are two hawfinches in the garden, but it's impossible to photograph them, they are too shy.

A mild and clera afternoon, spent walking in the wood behind our home, with the kids and the cat, in the last, melting, snow. Birds are starting to sing, robins, tits, short toed treecreepers and green woodpeckers.

Mild temperatures push a feeling of the sea on this side of the mountains, not a scent, more of a reflection of light in the sky, that invites people to leave the valley to go to the near Ligurian Sea coast.

With my sister's family and mine, I went to Manarola, in the Cinque Terre. On the cliffs, there were many colorful flowers in the maquis, flight of gulls and calls of Sardinian Warblers.

Le temperature miti spingono di qua dall'Appennino un sentore di mare che non è profumo, ma è più un riflesso nella luce del cielo, che invita a lasciare la valle per andare sulla vicina costa del mar Ligure.

Con la famiglia di mia sorella e la mia, sono stato a Manarola, nelle Cinque Terre. Sulle scogliere, fiori colorati nella macchia mediterranea, voli di gabbiani e richiami di occhicotto.

Late in the afternoon I found this flower of Veronica persica in the meadow behind my house, a very small bloom partially open. These days temperature is enough warm, up to 10°C, and it's easy to mistake that spring is near, but cold days and snow is probably just waiting for us behind the corner.

Nel tardo pomeriggio ho trovato questo fiore di Veronica persica dietro casa, un piuccolo boccio appena aperto. Today I was finally been able to trap-focus the coal tit. There are two that come to my feeder coming from the nearby line of Douglas and silver firs every days, they are enoguh tame, but usually stay up in the branches making photographing them quite difficult.

I resorted to the old *istD camera because using the K-5 all the memory was wasted in a few second when the first great tit approached the feeder. The slow and narrow-buffered *istD, instead, is able to do just not more than three or four shots for any arriving bird, and so I captured both the coal tits and some blue tits, along the quite numerous greats.

Oggi finalmente sono riuscito a foto-trappolare la cincia mora. Ce ne sono due che vengono alla mia mangiatoia regolarmente, provenienti dal vicino filare di duglasie e abeti bianchi; sono abbstanza confidenti, ma di solito se ne stanno sui rami alti, e fotografarle è abbastanza difficile.

Sono ricorso alla vecchia *istD, perchè usando la K-5 tutta la memoria si spreca in pochi secondi al primo arrivo di cinciallegra. La istD, lenta e con piccolo buffer è invece capace di fare solo tre o quattro scatti per ogni arrivo di uccello, e così ho potuto riprendere sia le cinciamore che alcune cinciarelle, oltre alla numerose cinciallegre.

Temperature has risen to 10°C, a few rays of sun have found a way between the clouds, even a short toed treecreper today has started to sing. In the woods, helleboruses has begun to open their buds, both Helleborus viridis and H. foetidus.

After some cold and cloudy days after the first of the year, two days ago we had a light snow, then yesterday and today we had ice rain again. I have never seen so much ice rain in the course of one winter, and it's just the beginning of January.

Dopo alcuni giorni di freddo e nuvole dopo Capodanno, due giorni fa c'è stata una leggerissima nevicata, e ieri ed oggi è caduta pioggia gelata. Non ho mai visto così tanto gelicidio nel corso di un solo inverno, ed è appena l'inizio di Gennaio.

After a few mild and rainy days, with temperatures around 6°C max and around 0° min, this morning cold wind from north made max to drop around zero, and rain became a snow blizzard. It stopped in the evening. Today I tried to photograph snow crystal on a piece of glass. My bellows is broken, so I had to improvise with what I had at hand.

Dopo qualche giorno mite e piovoso, con temperature massime intorno ai 6° e minime sopra lo zero, questa mattina aria fredda settentrionale ha causato un brusco calo della massima a zero, e la pioggia si è trasformata in una buriana di neve, con fiocchi turbinanti. In serata ha smesso. Oggi ho provato a fotografare i fiocchi di neve su un pezzo di vetro. Il mio soffietto è rotto, così ho dovuto improvvisare con quel che avevo a disposizione.

Yesterday we had a light snow and today the sky was still cloudy. I managed to find some time to go back to the creek and do some icicle photos, before the rise in temperature (today max of 0°C) will take them away.

Today temperature went from -10°C to a maximum of -4°C. We had a light snow for all of yeasterday, while today was a very clear day. I went to the creek behind our home, with my son Luca, to photograph some of the icicles forming over the boulders emerging from the stream. Luca was feeling cold, so we stayed for just a few minutes. I will come back soon to make better shots.

Oggi la temperatura è variata tra -10°C di minima e -4 di massima. Abbiamo avuto una leggera nevicata per tutto ieri, ma oggi era una spendida giornata serena. Sono andato al ruscello dietro casa, assieme a mio figlio Luca, per fotografare un po' di ghiaccioli che sis tanno formando sui massi emergenti dalla corrente. Luca aveva freddo, e siamo rimasti pochi minuti. Tornerò nei prossimi giorni per fare scatti migliori.

After the glazed ice of yesterday, today everything is covered in a thick layer of ice. But it's only closing up on the leaves and berries that I discovered amazing embossing on the ice surface.

This afternoon I tried my new portable hide with a photo session along the Taro river. I placed the hide where the water was slow and shallow, and I put a little brach taken from ground right in front of the window. After half an hour a female kingfisher came, and she stayed for long on the stick and others near.

Ho sperimentato il mio nuovo capanno con un paio d'ore di scatti in riva al Taro. Ho piazzato il capanno in un punto con acqua bassa e lenta, ed ho messo un rametto raccolto da terra proprio di fronte alla feritoia, e mi sono messo in paziente attesa. Dopo mezz'ora una femmina di martino è arrivata, ed è restata a lungo sul rametto e su altri vicini.

This is the first macro that I post on my blog, and obviously it's not a trap-focus.My wife and daughter have found it in the wood, while looking for mushrooms, and borught it home to me. Taking it to identify, it moved a little its horns, so I photographed it and then put in the woodshed, away from predators. Probably the sudden drop of temperatures (of ten degrees, with 0°in the morning) stunned it.
Shot with K20D, 100/4 Takumar macrobellow, 26cm of extension (bellow and two sets of macrotubes), two tripods.

Ecco la prima macro che posto nel blog, ovviamente non un trap focus. Mia moglie e mia figlia hanno trovato questa falena per terra nel bosco, andando per funghi, e me la hanno portata credendola morta. Prendendola per identificarla, ho visto che muoveva debolmente le antenne, per cui ho pensato di fotografarla e poi metterla al riparo nella legnaia. Evidentemente il brusco calo di 10°c nelle temperature la ha tramortita.

It's a very hot autumn this year, birds seems not interested in the feeder and trap-focus doesn't work, so, tired of seeing my blog dead I decided to start posting "normal" pictures, made with me behind the camera. I think I will open the blog to my general wildlife and nature pictures, starting today with a jay shot on the hairy oak in front of my home. Enjoy!

After some days of warmth, with instant blooming of snowdrops and crocus, this morning we woke up finding it was snowing hard. A real blizzard. Luckily it lasted only a few hours, and then the sun appeared through the clouds. I set the trap focus on a tiny branch, hanging a fat ball on a pole just below, and was able to shot great and blue tits.

Dopo alcuni giorni di caldo, con improvvisa fioritura di bucaneve e crochi, questa mattina ci siamo svegliati trovando che stava nevicando forte, una vera tormenta. Fortunatamente è durata poche ore, e poi il sole ha squarciato le nubi. Ho piazzato la trappola verso un rametto di nocciolo, mettendoci sotto una pallina di grasso attaccata ad un paletto, e sono riuscito a riprendere cinciallegre e cinciarelle.

After many weeks of uninteresting trappings of the usual species, today I catched a robin in the act of singing. By this time of the year, robin have lost the boldness they display in winter in gardens and lives all the day in the deep of the wood, very shy, letting out only their powerful song.
This one came to the feeder late in the afternoon, and sang for a few second after having feed, before flying back in the cover.

Dopo molte settimana di trappolaggi poco interessanti delle solite specie, oggi ho catturato un pettirosso mentre canta. In questo momento dell'anno i pettirossi hanno perso la baldanza che mostrano in inverno nei giardini e vivono tutto il giorno nel fitto dei boschi, molto timidi, liberando solo il loro canto potente.
Questo è venuto alla mangiatoia nel tardo pomeriggio, e ha cantato per qualche secondo dopo essersi nutrito, prima di volare di nuovo al coperto.

Today, seeing the beautiful light on the northern side of the garden, I aimed the camera at the same fence pole where, a little more than one year ago, I did trap-focus for the first time. Like then, it was a robin to come. Much more fluffed up, considering the arctic cold.

Oggi, vista la bellissima luce sul lato nord del giardino ho puntato la camera sul palo della recinzione dove poco più di un anno fa ho praticato per la prima volta trap-focus. Come allora, è arrivato un pettirosso. Molto più ciccio, visto il freddo polare.

Yesterday I got an interesting sequence of a fight of a chaffinch stealing the sunflower seeds place from an Italian sparrow. In the end it was a marsh tit to win the seed.

It's snowing again, heavily. I tried to set up the camera in the morning, only to discover that snow flakes were big enough to make my Pentax to shot. Before putting the camera to rest for the day, I did some pictures, among them this pair of tree sparrow.

It's snowing again, from noon on. I aimed the camera at the compost bin, where many crows come looking for kitchen waste, and I have been able to shot a partially albinistic jackdaw that sometimes comes to my garden.

Today I tried to have the jay coming again to their feeder putting some sunflower seed, hoping some tits movement would signal the food. No one come, just the woodpecker, some great tits and one blue tit.

Sometimes among the pictures of a trap focus session we can find true gems, amazing images of bird life. For example this fight between tow sparrow females, that the long shutter speed made even more exciting.

It's two days that rain is pouring down like mad, it made disappear the 40 cm of snow we had on ground. Most birds seems disappeared like the snow, and only a few tits come looking for sunflowers seeds.

Although very common around here, jays are very careful when they come to feeders, and I never managed to catch one in photo. This, very far from a technically good picture, is my first success at shooting one. Shot yesterday in the afternoon.

Be careful when you set your trap-focus stage, because it could always appear some birds larger than the average. This time a hooded crow came to nut prepared for the woodpeckers, but only in this shot the bird was completely inside the frame.

Bisogna fare attenzione quando approntate il trap-focus, perchéè possono comparire alcuni uccelli più grandi della media. Questa volta una cornacchia grigia è arrivata attratta dalle noci messe per il picchio, ma solo in questo scatto l'uccello era completamente dentro la cornice.

Sometimes trap-focus images are not beautiful in the traditional sense, but are fun nevertheless. I had to recover this from severe underexposure, so technically it's very bad, but made many friends to laugh at the funny "dance" of the woodpecker

How to do / Come fare

You need: an AF Pentax reflex camera (a DSRL is preferable), a KA mount manual lens, an electrical cable release with lock and a tripod or similar camera support (pic 1).
Camera must be set on AF-S (pic 2), continuous shooting (pic 3), exposure mode on AV (pic 4). Aperture priority allows the use of a large aperture, with shallow DOF and fast shutter time to freeze movements.
Aim the central focus point to the place where your subject is expected to come, manual focus until focus aid (green hexagon) lit up, recompose to have the central focus point to aim at the point where subject head should be.
Now put viewfinder cap on, to avoid errors in exposure (pic 5)
Plug in the cable release (pic 6), push the release button and block it (pic 7).
Nothing will happens. Go to the place your subject will come, wave you hand in the focus point, and you will hear the shutter working.
Go away and allow subjects to come. After some hours come back and control if pictures counter advanced. If so, you can replay pictures on the LCD to see what species came.

Occorrono: macchina AF Pentax, obiettivo manuale con attacco KA, telecomando a filo con blocco dello scatto e treppiede o altro supporto per la macchina (fig. 1).
La macchina deve essere impostata su AF-S (fig. 2), lo scatto su continuo (fig. 3), il modo di esposizione su AV (fig. 4). La priorità ai diaframmi consente di scegliere un diaframma molto aperto, per uno sfondo sfocato, e tempi il più rapidi possibili per bloccare il soggetto.
Dovete mirare al punto su cui sperate si posi il soggetto, mettere a fuoco manualmente fino a far illuminare il segnale di messa a fuoco corretta (esagono verde). A questo punto ricomponete l'immagine, in modo che il punto centrale di messa fuoco sia dove vi aspettate che andrà a posizionarsi il capo del soggetto.
A questo punto tappate il mirino, altrimenti l'esposizione verrà falsata (fig. 5).
Inserite il telecomando a filo (fig. 6), premete il pulsante di scatto e bloccatelo (fig7).
Non succederà niente. Andate vicino al posatoio, passate la mano nel punto in cui dovrà andare il soggetto, ed udirete la raffica di scatti.
Allontanatevi e lasciate che i soggetti si avvicinino alla trappola. Tornate dopo qualche ora e controllate se l'indicatore degli scatti è avanzato. In tal caso potete controllare sull'LCD quali specie si sono avvicinate.

While setting the camera to aim to some prominent perch makes for unexpected surprises, the best way to get a load of photos is to give birds food to attract them to the chosen spot, and to make them stay long.
Various kinds of food are suitable: nuts for tits, nuthatch and woodpeckers, sunflower seeds for tits, sparrows and finches, fat for all kinds of insect-eating birds.

Se puntare la camera ad un posatoio prominente consente di avere sorprese inaspettate, il modo migliore perchè la macchina scatti tantissime foto è dare cibi per attrarre gli uccelli e tenerli davanti al'obiettivo per lungo tempo.
Diversi tipi di cibo sono adatti: nocciole e noci per cince, picchi muratori e picchi, semi di girasole per cince, passeri e fringillidi, strutto per ogni tipo di insettivoro.

Although I use Pentax cameras since the age of fourteen, and the trap focus feature was introduced with the first AF SLR Pentax, the Pentax SFX/SF1, of 1987, only last year I "discovered" and began experimenting with this feature.
I set up my *istD on Manfrotto tripod and manual lens Pentax-A 100/4 macro toward a pole of the fence of my garden, next to a hazelnut hedgerow.
When I returned to the camera after a few hours, I was amazed to find that there were a lot of pictures on the card. The first bird to show was a robin (Erithacus rubecula), a bold species always looking for new things entering his home range, but he was closely followed by a not-so-common and very shy dunnock, a bird that I never managed to photograph previously, and a great tit.
It was November, 13th, of last year. Since then, in less than two months, I have shot thousands of frames using trap-focus, recording a dozen different species of bird just in my garden, experimenting with different perches and food to attract them.

Benchè utilizzi fotocamere Pentax dall'età di quattordici anni, e il trap-focus fu introdotto nella prima Pentax AF, la SF1/SFX del 1987, solo l'anno scorso l'ho scoperto ed iniziato a sperimentare.
Ho piazzato la mia *istD su treppiede Manfrotto e obittivo macro A100/4, puntata verso un paletto della recinzione del mio orto, vicino ad una siepe di nocciolo.
Al mio ritorno, sono rimasto meravigliato nel trovare molte foto sulla card. Il primo ad arrivare era stato un pettirosso, una specie aggressiva sempre attratta da cose nuove che compaiono sul suo territorio, ma subito era arrivata anche una passera scopaiola, poco comune e molto timida, un uccello che non ero mai riuscito a fotografare prima, ed infine una cinciallegra.
Era il 13 Novembre scorso. Da allora, in meno di due mesi, ho scattato migliaia di immagini usando il trap-focus, ritraendo una dozzina di specie diverse solo nel mio giardino, sperimentando con posatoi diversi e tipi di cibo.
